Building something real in a world full of quick fixes
Look, I'm not gonna feed you some polished origin story about how I always knew I'd open a gym. Truth is, I was just tired of seeing people get sold garbage programs that don't work.
Back in 2019, I was training out of a basement with maybe three barbells and a dream that was probably too big for the space. But those early morning sessions with a handful of dedicated athletes? That's when I realized what training should actually feel like - raw, honest, and built on real progression.
We opened Obsidry Empire in 2021 with one goal: create a space where serious lifters and athletes could train without the fluff. No juice bars. No Instagram walls. Just quality equipment, knowledgeable coaches, and people who show up ready to work.
The name came from this idea that you're building your own empire, rep by rep. Obsidry's a made-up word, yeah, but it stuck because it's ours. It represents that dark, gritty work you put in when nobody's watching.
Marcus Chen, Founder & Head Coach
CSCS, USAW Level 2, 15+ years coaching experience
Started with 8 athletes training in a 600 sq ft space. We'd rotate who got to use the squat rack. Everyone learned patience real quick.
Moved into the Burrard Street location. 4,500 sq ft, proper platforms, and enough equipment that people could actually train without waiting. Game changer.
Brought on three coaches who actually knew their stuff. Started our Olympic lifting program and watched athletes PR left and right.
Added nutrition consulting because we realized you can't out-train a bad diet. Also brought in proper recovery protocols - mobility work isn't sexy but it keeps you lifting.
200+ members, 7 coaches, and we're still keeping it real. No fancy machines you don't need. Just proven methods and people who care about your progress.

Here's the thing - we're not here to sell you on some revolutionary new method. There isn't one. What works has worked for decades: progressive overload, consistency, proper form, and showing up even when you don't feel like it.
We believe in treating people like adults. You'll get honest feedback, not endless praise for mediocre effort. But you'll also get support when you're struggling and celebration when you hit those PRs you've been chasing.
This isn't a place where everyone gets a medal. It's a place where you earn your progress through sweat and smart programming. We're cool with that not being everyone's vibe.
